it's baaAAAAaack!

back to this...

It's a bitter sweet reunion.

PRO's
My brain is happy and challenged to the nth degree.
I get to spend A LOT of time with some great girls I have met in the program
I feel accomplished and productive

CON's
Nick and I hardly see each other during the week. thank goodness for the weekends!
the house gets seriously neglected when school is the main focus
no more reading for pleasure...just big fatty text books...

the weekend was wonderful bliss that I wished wouldn't end.
it consisted of:

double date with Marky Mark and Amy
-making homemade spaghetti and a crazy french desert that we called "Snowman poop"
seeing new movies -
planet 51
seven pounds
cloudy with a chance of meatballs
Hancock

& LOTS of naps

well, it was a great rejuvenation, but now it's back to reality!
how ironic that "Manic Monday" just came on the radio...

OH, by the way...
anyone interested in being my dental hygiene patient for school?

If you don't have dental insurance:
the cost will be around $75 (respectively)
which is generally about $50-$60 cheaper than going to a regular hygienist

If you have dental insurance:
you will still have to pay the fee, BUT
you will be reimbursed
you just have to make sure your dental insurance will accept the services done at the dental school.
then you can turn in the papers to your insurance and they should give you a full refund,
since hygiene services are usually fully covered by insurance

You might be wondering why in the world you would want to do this, but it would be REALLY helping me out! We start working on patients a week from today, and I don't have anyone to fill up my first spots!

If you can't, don't worry. The dental school will give me patients, but I kinda wanted my first couple of patients not to be complete strangers so that I wasn't too nervous.

ANYWAY, have a happy week!

today

today I made this little cutie

my outfit was blue and I had nothing cute to put in my hair to match so....
tada!

At least it occupied me for 30 minutes today

In other random news that I forgot to blog about...
Last Sunday we ate dinner at my parents house. We always have so much fun over there! We played our new favorite game:
It's called 10,000 or more simply, the dice game. The goal is to get to 10,000 points, and as you can see here, Nick won! I was very close behind him.

The boys also played many rounds of "nerf war"
and I got ambushed!
forgive the noises that are apparently coming from me...

random post, but that's what I was thinking about today :)
happy Tuesday!

No pickles please

*random picture of the day*
I'm being "slow" can't you tell?

So if I was bored last week, you can imagine how bored I am this week. It's been nice to have such a long break, but when you can't work because school is too intense, then what do you do during break?

Well, I purposefully didn't clean on Saturday because I thought it would give me something to do today...but what about the rest of the week? I've already put together all the puzzles we own, read at least 3 books and reorganized every space in our home that was feeling a tad bit "unorganized". I'm sure I can find something to do, but I want to feel productive at the same time. Watching TV, for example, is definitely something to do, but it won't make me feel good.

Even though I'm bored, this post is NOT a plea for someone to actually find me something to do. I kind of like the fact that I have no plans whatsoever and I can do whatever I feel like doing whenever I want. SO, I guess I'm just letting you know that I'm bored...cool huh?

SO this weekend was pretty fun. We hung out with nick's friend Mark and my friend Caitlin and played 10,000 (the dice game) which is Nick's favorite, and balderdash. We also watched Dumb and Dumber because someone *coughMEcough* had never seen it before. I know I know you just CAN'T believe I haven't seen it. Well, sometimes I'm a snot and think I'm too good for movies that I heard are "BAD" when I was like, 7. This is the #1 reason why I've never seen legally blonde. But who am I kidding? I've seen Drop Dead Gorgeous and that was worse than Dumb and Dumber...

When we were trying to decide on what movie to watch, Caitlin and Nick had a very funny conversation...

*someone mentions watching hotrod*

Caitlin: that has some inappropriate things in it

Nick: not really, not as bad as other movies

Caitlin: that's like saying "this hamburger is so good, except there's a cockroach in it..."

Nick: no it's not. It's like getting pickles on your hamburger when you didn't ask for them. They just gave them to you and you didn't even know till you bit in.

Caitlin: ...

*someone mentions dumb and dumber*

Kristin the snot head: I heard that movie is naughty

Caitlin: Oh it's not that bad. It's really funny actually

Nick: *in a mocking sort of voice* that's like saying "this hambuger is sooo good, except there's a cockroach in it..."

Caitlin: HAHA! nice

it was pretty funny. I especially loved Nick's analogy about the pickles.

Yesterday we had our second sunday at the 8:30 time. JEESH that is so early. We got a brand new sunbeam class, and we are in the very exhausting process of training them how to behave in Primary. What a rude awakening huh? Going from toys and treats to sitting still, being reverent, and not talking. They were already better than last week, so that gives me hope for next week. They are really great kids, they just can't sit still for the life of them! What's even more "funny" is that the other class of sunbeams (because there are 12 of them total, but they thought they would be nice and split them up into two classes, thank goodness) even though they have 7 kids and we have 5, sit still all through primary, AND actually participate. It's literally like they gave us the 5 most rowdy kids in the whole bunch. I guess that just means they trust us to whip 'em in shape eh?
What really gets me though is that the other teacher, an older lady, was complaining to us that we only have 5 and she has 7 and she doesn't have a team teacher. I wanted to say so bad to her, "Hey, don't complain to us. You have all the good kids that actually pay attention while our kids run around grabbing curtains and standing on chairs. Want to trade?!" but I'm sure that wouldn't go over to well...
My main goal with these kids is just to learn to love them. I'm sure that once they can feel how much we love them and they come to respect us, they won't be going so crazy all the time.

well, I should probably go and get something done before it gets too late...even though I have time to do it all tomorrow...but alas, that would not be very productive would it?

happy new week!

For the love of all things vintage, hair clips, and the ability to make it yourself

I made this super cute vintage inspired flower hair clip for two of my BFFs for Christmas and I just had to make one for myself!

So…I decided to make a tutorial out of it so that you guys can make them too!

Materials needed:

  1. Strips of fabric (length and width depend on how big and ruffled you want your flower to be
  2. Lace of awesomeness
  3. Needle and thread
  4. Scissors
  5. Hot glue gun
  6. Embellishment (I would go with a pearly looking bead to get the vintage look)
  7. Hair clip

STEP 1:

Cut your fabric strips

I kinda eye balled it on this one so I don't know the exact measurements of my fabric, but keep this in mind:

  • The width of your strip determines the size of your flower. If you want a smaller flower, cut your strips about 1" in width, if you want it bigger cut it around 1.5 to 2" (thats' probably where mine is)

  • The length of your flower determines how ruffled your flower is. Mine is quite ruffled and was maybe a foot and a half long (again, I should have measured it) but you'll figure out once you start that if you do not have enough fabric your flower will start to curve in.

STEP 2:

Grab your trusty needle and thread.

I like to thread my needle, tie a knot in the end and pull it through to secure the thread. However, if you have a better/different way of doing it, be my guest. This is just what works best for me

STEP 3:

Beginning stitch

If you want, you may feel free to skip this step because it is just something I like to do to pull over the first end and make it look prettier

With your needle above, bring it around to the bottom of your strip so that it wraps around the small end with the knot. Then bring the needle up and out through the bottom close to the knot. I hope that was clear…maybe the pictures will help…

STEP 4:

Begin stitching!

It's pretty simple. Just bring the needle down and through and up and through till you have covered the entire length of your strip of fabric.

Keep this in mind: more space between each stitch gives a bigger ruffle (like on the one that I made). If you want smaller ruffles, make the stitches closer together

STEP 5:

Begin to Ruffle

When you're done stitching down the length of your fabric strip you can pull on your piece of thread and watch your ruffles transform! OR if you are impatient like me, you can ruffle your strip as you go along making your stitches! I like doing it this way, because then I can see my progress and know when I'm done!

Your fabric strip should start to look more like a flower! Like this:

STEP 6:

Putting ends together

When you have reached the length and "ruffle-ness" that pleases you most, STOP. It is now time to stitch the two ends together to complete the flower

Take your needle and put it into the opposite end of the strip. Put it about half an inch into the ruffles and then bring it out (I'm so bad at explaining…just look at the picture…) and pull the thread to bring the two sides together

Once you have pulled the two sides together, it should look something like this:

STEP 7:

Secure stitches

Turn flower over and make several "secure stitches" to keep everything in place. Put them where ever you feel it needs some security

WOW that seemed like a lot, but I PROMISE it doesn't take that long.

Now on to the lacey goodness!

STEP 8:

Attaching the lace

I don't ever cut the lace before hand because I don't want to risk not having enough or waste any excess. So I apply the lace where ever I feel it looks cutest on the back. I like to see it poking out a bit, but not overwhelming the whole look of the flower. This step can be done with stitching (which is what I did) or it could be done using hot glue.

YAY! You're practically done!

Now just add embellishments and a clip to hold it in your hair with your hot glue gun!

I just love this because you can wear it in your hair, on your shirt/sweater/jacket or even on a purse!

Very very cute! Enjoy!

Loves,

K
